The POWER Of GOD'S WORD

From altar server to Elder in the Seventh day Adventist Church
My name is Shawn Phillip. This is my testimony of how I became a Seventh Day Adventist.

As a young man growing up in the Catholic Church, I always enjoyed being active in service for Christ. Before the age of seven (7) years, my parents went to church seldom to the Roman Catholic Church. All I knew was that I was a Catholic and that I belonged to that church. On Sundays we would sleep late and it would be that way all the time.

After attending the Catholic Church for a while, I realized that there were young men becoming altar servers who were serving with the Priest on the altar. I liked that and I wanted to be one of them so I joined the group. After a few years I became the head of the group in my church, after which I became the head of the group in the entire Island of Grenada.

During my time I did a lot for the young people who were altar servers. I went as far as understanding how and what has to be done at every

celebration of the church. At the age of 26 I decided to become a Catholic Priest. I was encouraged by one of my Parish Priest and I was given the opportunity to go to St. Lucia where I studied at a Minor Seminary to become a Catholic Priest. I spent one year in St. Lucia. During my stay in St. Lucia I was able to meet a lot of people and visited lots of places. After my one year in St. Lucia, I moved to Trinidad where I studied for two years.

During my stay in Trinidad I was also able to meet lots of people and made friends. Although I had a good time, I knew that something was lacking. Even though there were 24 young men living in the same house, I felt lonely at times so I decided that after the second year I would return to Grenada to discover what my calling really was. After I came back I spoke with the Bishop, after which I got a job as a Teacher. I must say that before I left, I was teaching in one of the Primary Schools right here in Grenada, so I was able to continue my teaching. In 2008, I started teaching in the Catholic School.

On my journey, I always knew about Seventh Day Adventists, but I was never really familiar with their teachings and what they practice. All I knew was they were Sabbath keepers and they go to church on Saturdays. Seventh Day Adventists were seen as people of some other cult. Although I was a member of the Catholic Church, I became friends with persons who were Seventh day Adventists. Also, I had a cousin and an uncle who are Adventists. They told me about the church and as a means of getting me interested. I heard about some crusades which were held by Seventh Day Adventists and I attended them at my own free will, however I was not interested in joining the faith. I wanted to get to know about the church so I can get to influence my friends who were Adventists to show them that the Adventists was of another cult who was there to grasp people away from the true church.

There was one crusade that was organized right in my village. I decided to go to that crusade, not knowing that the Lord had something in store for me. At least every other night I would attend the crusade. After hearing the preacher preached one night, I went home and tried to see if what he was saying was in line with what the Catholic Church teaches so I can show my friends and try to convince them. While doing that I stumbled upon the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments in the Cathecetism is somewhat different to what I was seeing in the Bible and what I heard at the crusade. This puzzled me and I needed to find out more so I decided to do some research on it. In doing that I realized that the Catholic Church, in a number of their books they left out the second commandment. That became puzzling to me so I prayed about it. That was a time in my life when I prayed the most.

As I drew closer to understanding what the teachings of the Adventist church were, I began to ask questions to my Catholic friends. Some of them couldn’t answer the questions. Some of the answers I got was not in line with what I was seeing in the scriptures, so I decided that I will do further research. I got onto the internet and started researching the time of when the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday. I came upon the website that showed me that Constantine changed the Sabbath day and so when the Catholic Church gave over its civil power of rule to the Catholic Church, he would have kept that teaching that he would have put for his ruling for his country/ empire. That became puzzling. They also said that there was no teaching in the Bible that showed the change from Saturday to Sunday. I became more concerned and prayed more earnestly.

On the last week of the crusade I decided that what I was seeing from the Catholic Church was not good enough, so I had to make a change. I got baptized in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. This was just my turning point. There were some things that I was convinced of: the Ten Commandments, the teachings of purgatory, the teachings of the change from Saturday to Sunday as the Sabbath Day. These were all clear in my mind. After becoming an Adventist, I continued to do more research to find out what else the Catholic Church has been teaching that is not in sync with the scriptures. I looked at John chapter 1 and saw where the Bible says that in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God and the Word was made flesh. The teaching that we have to eat Christ’s flesh to be satisfied, I found out that the body that Christ was talking about was the Word of God. So I started to understand more. I also came upon the scripture that showed me the Mark of the Beast and began to understand about Bible Prophecies in Revelation.

For all of my life I was told that Revelation was a horrible book to read and it would just be frightening to anyone who is reading it. These were some of my understanding and my tests as I became deeper into the Adventist Church. It was not easy but I had to do something for myself and to make a change in serving God in the right way. So I decided to leave and go where I intended to be more exposed to the scriptures and what it really teaches.

As an Adventist, I got to understand that the Bible is the sole piece of literature of which our teachings and doctrines comes from. I also understood that this is the only thing we need.  The Scriptures is the sole book on which we base our doctrines and this is what I believe made the difference for me. Understanding that scripture is all that we need and that is what God gave us so that we can come to know Him, and to love Him.

I want to tell you friends, think about it, and take the scriptures seriously, read the scripture. Those of you who are not of the Adventist faith, do your research and you will realize that the Adventist Church is the Church that teaches exactly what the scripture says. You should follow exactly what God teaches in His Word. I want to admonish you to listen to His Word, read the scriptures and come to know God. Friends, we have a decision to make. A decision to for the Lord. Salvation is an individual matter. Why not make that decision today? Today is the day that God is calling you. He is calling us now to make that decision for Him.
